Do you have NSTAR electric or municipal electric? You can participate in the Clean Energy Choice program by signing up for New England Wind.

What Is GreenUpSM?

As of September 2003, National Grid (NGRID) customers (formerly Mass Electric in MA) have been able to make a choice to invest in clean, renewable electricity directly through their electric utility bill!

This is the "GreenUp" initiative of NGRID, providing a simple way for the community of faith to make a choice for the earth and its inhabitants by opting to invest in renewable energy directly through their bills.

The choice is simple. National Grid customers can now choose a clean, renewable electricity option rather than sticking with your existing dirty, non-renewable fossil fuel package. When you purchase electricity without also investing in a clean, renewable option, you are paying for polluting fossil fuel power plants to generate electricity. In Massachusetts, about 54% of our electricity is generated by power plants that burn coal, oil, or gas; another 29% or so comes from nuclear plants. See graphic for Massachusetts' current electrical power mix. (Source: EPA E-GRID 2002 Version 2.0)

The pollution from these dirty power plants disproportionately impacts people living in poverty and people of color. By "voting with your dollar" through the GreenUp initiative, you will be asking NGRID to use sun power, wind power, landfill gas, low impact hydro, and other renewable sources of electricity. Please be sure to check "GreenerWatts New England" and WRITE "MIP&L" or "Interfaith Power & Light" next to the box to make sure that your congregation gets the financial incentive while making this choice for the earth!

Who Can Participate in GreenUpSM?

GreenUp is available to all National Grid residential and small business customers on standard or basic service. If you have NSTAR electric or a municipal electric company, you cannot participate in GreenUp. However, you CAN purchase "greentags".

There are two great local options available to you: New England Wind and ClimateSAVE (successor to ReGen). Note that New England Wind is also eligible for the Clean Energy Choice matching grant program.

What is Clean Energy ChoiceSM?

Triple Your Impact with Clean Energy Choice!

When you sign up for National Grid's GreenUp Program or purchase New England Wind green tags, the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative (MTC) will match each dollar you spend to support new renewables with up to $1 for your city or town (Worcester, if you are a Worcester resident) to spend on renewable energy projects or educational materials, and with up to $1 for renewable energy and energy efficiency projects that benefit low-income residents. This matching program is called Clean Energy ChoiceSM

As always, "voting with your dollar" for clean energy will increase the demand for new electricity generating facilities that are renewable in source (e.g., wind, solar, etc.). As always, it also sends an important message to policymakers that you want clean, renewable energy sources rather than polluting fossil fuel burning power plants.

Truly, this is a win-win-win! It is, quite simply, the right thing to do. SIGN UP TODAY!
